Amazon intends to release 18,000 of its employs according to the memo shared by CEO Andy Jassy to the staff. It is the largest sacking in the history of the company. The reason for such a drastic step is being said to be the “uncertain economy” and that the company “hired rapidly over several years”.

The company’s corporate workforce will be affected by the layoffs, not the hourly warehouse workers. According to reports from November, Amazon planned to sack 10,000 employs but the post shared by the CEO mentioned an increased number.

The e-commerce giant saw a boost in sales during the pandemic, which led them to hire a lot of employs very rapidly. This resulted in the company going too far with recruiting.

CEO Jassy said in his blog post, “We are working to support those who are affected and are providing packages that include a separation payment, transitional health insurance benefits, and external job placement support.”
