After England’s batting once again struggled in a crucial game, India bowled them out for a pitiful 68. As England’s batting order was helpless, the other bowlers took some frequent wickets.

Soumya (24 not out) and Trisha (24) stitched a crucial combination to earn India their first-ever World Cup title in women’s cricket after a great bowling performance combined with some outstanding fielding enabled India bowl out England for just 68. The historic occasion occurs during the 2005 ODI World Cup in the nation where India first advanced to the World Cup final 18 years earlier.

Shafali Verma, the captain, who turned 19 on Saturday, started the chase by flicking a Hannah Baker delivery over fine leg for four before lofting Sophia Smale over long off for an enormous six in the following over. However, Shafali mistimed the chip and threw a low catch to mid-on in an attempt to go big off Hannah in the third over.

In the fifth over, Soumya relieved some of the stress around the run-chase with a well-timed lofted drive off Hannah over extra cover. She was granted a reprieve when Grace missed a good opportunity at slip on the very next ball.

England was limiting India’s scoring by using accurate fielding and tight bowling. However, Soumya and Trisha maintained the scoreline by taking singles. In the eighth over, Soumya hit a boundary off Sophia by flicking past the keeper. Replays revealed Grace’s elbow was in contact with the rope as she pushed the ball away.

In the following over, Josie Groves dropped short and wide, and Soumya quickly cut through point for a boundary. Contrarily, Trisha pulled Ellie Anderson with finesse through square leg for back-to-back boundaries in the 12th over, using both her front and back feet.

In the 13th over, Trisha creamed Alexa Stonehouse with a lovely drive-through extra cover. She stepped out for a cross-bat swipe in an attempt to go for the gold, but Alexa castled her. With a brace and one through point, Soumya completed the chase and gave India their first international victory in women’s cricket.

Brief scores: England 68 all out in 17.1 overs (Ryana Macdonald-Gay 19, Titas Sadhu 2/6, Parshavi Chopra 2/13) lost to India 69/3 in 14 overs (Soumya Tiwari 24 not out, Gongadi Trisha 24; Hannah Baker 1/13, Grace Scrivens 1/13) by seven wickets
