Final result between the USA and Serbia: The USMNT did not win the friendly match despite a goal from Brandon Vazquez

In a friendly match against Serbia on Wednesday night, the US national team showcased a number of inexperienced and young players as the January camp came to an end. Los Angeles suffered a 2-1 setback as a result.

The fact that they were penalised for apparent blunders both before and after the break taught those young players an important lesson about mistakes on the international stage.

The hosts were defeated by errors that directly resulted in goals after a 90-minute performance that likely merited a victory against an equally inexperienced Serbian team. At the halfway point, a magnificent header by Brandon Vazquez gave the Americans the lead, but they collapsed at two crucial times.

Prior to halftime, Luka Ilic equalised the score with a free kick that broke a weaker U.S. defence. Within seconds after the opening of the second half, Veljko Simic made up for a terrible error at the back.

Even with senior players Kellyn Acosta and Paul Arriola coming off the bench, the U.S. struggled to equalise despite controlling the game for the majority of the second half.

Throughout his 72 minutes, Cade Cowell excelled above the rest of the team. On the left side, the 19-year-old winger and Jonathan Gomez worked nicely together. In the final stretch, Alejandro Zendejas shone when he was placed in the centre.

It’s difficult to accept defeat in the first match after the World Cup, but there were positives to take away from these 90 minutes. Results are less important than performance. The United States will finish up its January camp with a match against Colombia on Saturday.

The Sporting News offered score updates, analysis, and highlights as they happened throughout the USA vs. Serbia match.
