Turkey-Syria earthquake: At least 19,823 people have died as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday. Recep Tayyip Erdoan, the president of Turkey, initially reported 16,546 deaths, but state media in Syria later reported that 1,347 people had died in government-held areas. 1,930 deaths have been reported in rebel-held areas in the country’s north and west, according to the White Helmets civil defence organisation earlier.

According to Turkey’s crisis management office, at least 28,044 people have been evacuated from Kahramanmaraş, one of the southern Turkish provinces that was severely damaged by Monday’s earthquake, including 23,437 by air and 4,607 by road and rail.Rescue workers kept freeing people who had been trapped under the debris for days.

Since Monday, Turkey has received help commitments from 95 nations and 16 international organisations. As of Tuesday, 6,479 rescuers from 56 nations were working in the quake’s impacted areas, and 19 more nations are expected to send teams within the next 24 hours.

The 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes in Turkey have been followed by nearly 650 aftershocks, according to AHAD, the country’s disaster management agency. This makes rescue operations even riskier and more difficult as teams of emergency personnel search through severely damaged structures.
